Geocache Description:

An island famous for its Smuggler King!

The Smuggler King
XMAS2005-20

This was geocache no 20 in a series of 24, a kind of Geocaching Christmas Calendar for the Christmas of 2007.
The remaining 23 calendar caches are placed in various locations all over Sweden.
This cache was "deChristmasefied" the 13th of January, 2008.

Please, be sure to restore the hiding place in its original way, so it remains “storm safe”, and also because it’s a very public area, especially during summertime!

The cache is in a 0,4 litre, square shaped, transparent plastic Lock&Lock food container.

A “thing” related to the "theme of the cache".
Kalvsund has an ancestry as an important harbour and commercial place. The island was habitation for skippers, pilots, customs officers and fishermen.

"The Smuggler Villa" was erected in 1912, of timber from the wrecked ship "Svolder". The villa was bought 1917 by Ernst Bremer, more well-known as "the Smuggler King".

He had his own fleet of 16 vessels of which some were very fast, 28 knots, a considerable speed in the 1920’s. Though the customs had an office on the island (the small red cottage in the aerial view picture) they never caught him red-handed!

In 1984 it was made a film about “the Smuggler King”, which opened in 1985, but the script writers made the whole story up, but based on true facts, because they didn’t believe Ernst Bremer still was live.

They were wrong! Before the opening night the newspaper "Expressen" made an interview with the 98 year old “Smuggler King”. He didn’t over live the opening night, so he never saw the movie about his life.

******************************************************
