This portion of Old Murphy Dome Road and offshoot trails are
groomed by local dog mushers for dog team training.
Snowmachine traffic also keeps the trail well packed because the
old road bed connects several subdivisions located on the north
side of Goldstream Valley and Spinach Creek. You may travel
the route on foot, snowshoes, skis, snowmachine, or mountain
bike...just keep in mind that this is a multi-use trail and be
respectful of other trail users. Access should be good
year-round with no swampy areas to traverse. Be sure park in
the plowed parking area at the end of the maintained section of Old
Murphy Dome Road so that drivers pulling trailers can still turn
around.
Old Murphy Dome Road was the original access road to the Murphy
Dome White Alice Communications (WACS) site. WACS was used
throughout Alaska from about 1956 until 1979 as part of the United
States' early warning system during the Cold War. The system
was eventually superseded by satellite communication
technology. For more information on the system, visit the
very informative WACS website.
The original cache contents include a crystal snowman, some
Ladybug Kids signature items, and swag suitable for adults and
kids. The cache also contains a single-use camera. Please
take a photo and leave the camera in the cache for the next
finder. The film will later be developed and the images will
be added to this cache page. There is also a very special FTF
prize from Santa Claus, who must have slipped it into the cache
container when he visited the Ladybug Kids' home on Christmas
Eve. If you take a close look at the left image, you'll that
even Santa has switched over to satellite technology. And
don't forgot to enjoy the caching version of "T'was The Night
Before Christmas!"
