Geocache Description:

NOTE TO ALL WHO SEEK THE FESTIVUS CACHE: This is an offset cache, which means that you will not find the cache at the coordinates listed above. You will need to reach a couple of different stages, and will have to answer some questions included in this cache listing if you wish to find the cache. You will not find the cache at the coordinates listed above. Don’t say we didn’t warn you...twice. Now for the cache!

With roots dating back to ancient Roman times, Festivus was first popularized on a Seinfeld episode which aired in December 1997. On the show, Frank Costanza saw the need for a secular, non-commercial holiday after getting into a brawl with another Christmas shopper; the result was Festivus. Festivus has no required rituals or totems, but many adherents find the following customs to be essential (or at least amusing).

THE FESTIVUS POLE. The Festivus Pole is an unadorned metal pole. It can be of any size. It represents nothing.

THE AIRING OF GRIEVANCES. Many Festivus celebrants partake in the Airing of Grievances, where complaints, accusations, and disappointments are shared with the source of the grievance. Cathartic hugging-and-making-up sessions are not desirable.

THE FEATS OF STRENGTH. Often the Festivus celebration will involve Feats of Strength. A common feat is wrestling, and, according to many Seinfeld-based Festivus purists, the Festivus celebration cannot end until the head of the family is pinned. Other recorded feats are thumb-wrestling, hula-hooping, and holding your breath.

Festivus traditionalists believe that the Festivus celebration should take place each year on December 23rd. But since the term “Festivus traditionalist” is really an oxymoron, we believe that Festivus can be celebrated anytime you want. Which means that you can hunt for this cache anytime you want.

The listed coordinates will put you at the Festivus Pole. This is not a moment for celebration or reflection; you are just standing at a pole. On the pole, you will see a series of five small yellow stickers. The sticker at the center of this grouping shows a number. This number = X in the Airing of Grievances coordinates. We apologize for the slight adornment of the pole.

When you reach the Airing of Grievances coordinates, you will see a large picnic table. Sit down and think about all of the people who have disappointed you in the last year. If you are caching with others, take the opportunity to express any problems you have with those people. Now look at the top of the picnic table. How many planks of wood were used to build it? Multiply this number by 2. The answer = Y in the Feats of Strength Coordinates. Wrestling will be optional.

When you reach the Feats of Strength coordinates, you will be standing near the mighty Cape Fear River. Take a stone or shell from the shore and throw it into the water. That was your Feat of Strength. Now, take a look at one of the posts preceding the final landing on the shore. How many nails were used to secure the top piece? Add 4 to this number. The answer = Z in the Festivus cache coordinates.

The Festivus cache is not full of goodies and trade items. That would betray the true spirit of Festivus. We don’t want you to put any trade items in the Festivus cache (Travel Bugs are okay). In the cache you will find a variety of Festivus cards, a camera, and a logbook. Please sign the log, and feel free to air additional grievances here. Take your picture, but don’t feel that you have to smile. You may also take a Festivus card to share with a person who has disappointed or frustrated you in life. That’s it.
