Nothing special about this particular cache. Just a log book. However, this is my first cache to place. I decided on this park because it is dedicated to the memory of a fallen officer.
Leo Spicer was a public safety officer for the City of Forest Hill in the late 70s and early 80s. Public Safety Officers are those that are trained in Fire Fighting, Emergency Medical Services and are also Police Officers. Unfortunately, if there is a park dedicated to a fallen officer, this means that he died.
In the early 80s, 1981 if I remember correctly, a vehicle had run into a liquor store on Mansfield Hwy. (Sleepy's Liquor). The vehicle sheared off the business's natural gas meter and there was a large gas leak. Somehow the gas ignited and Leo Spicer was badly burned. Ofc. Spicer fought for several days in the hospital, but had 3rd degree burns over much of his body. A few days later, Ofc. Spicer died due to his injuries.
On this particular day, Ofc. Spicer was working as a Fire Fighter/EMT versus a police officer. For that reason, Ofc. Spicer is not listed on the Peace Officers Memorial in Austin. Ofc. Spicer's widow still lives in Forest Hill. I am dissapointed in the park though, you think that if the park is dedicated to someone who died, the city would spend the money for the upkeep and make it a very nice park. I am sorry that the surroundings are not very good, but I wanted this cache to bring attention to a fallen hero.
