Here's our little way of saying goodbye to 2005 and hello to 2006. Please do not hunt at night out of respect for the nearby neighbors.
We found this spot in one of those 'check Topo and see what looks interesting' moments, making it one of those drives worth making the extra time for.
From "Thunder Over The Ochocos, Volume IV": 'John Calbreath, a Pony Express Rider for the Canyon City Mining Companies was enroute to Sacramento on the Yreka Trail. His saddlebags were stuffed with gold dust & nuggets. When he didn't show up, they put out a search for him. He was found in the Bear Creek Gulch, where he was buried. It is not known whether he was killed by Indians or road agents'.
The best we can presume, it appears that Mr. Calbreath lost his life here in 1865 (approx.). At this time, the town of Paulina was referred to as "The Bucket of Blood"; a place where women & children should stay away.
Thanks to John Arriaga who constructed this fence protecting John Calbreath's grave in the summer of 1970.
