Teams must provide their own means of transportation and GPS unit;
(a camera crew is optional). Teams will not receive any additional
money for this leg of the race.
This setting, located at the exact spot where the historic city
of Halifax was founded in 1749, is the starting point for the first
leg of the Halifax Amazing Race. Strictly speaking, you do not need
to go to the above-noted starting co-ordinates but every race needs
to have a starting line. If you do go to these co-ordinates,take
some time to check out the historical plaques for more about the
history of Halifax.
Detour: A choice between two different ways to accomplish
a goal or reach a destination. Each way has its own pros and cons.
On the surface, one may seem easy but involves some sort of twist;
the other may seem difficult but in the end may be the quicker
choice.
Detour: Deep Blue Sea or Sky High
To find their first clue, teams must make their way to the
Dartmouth Ferry Terminal using one of two common methods of travel
in Halifax. Teams must choose between taking a ferry ride across
Halifax Harbour or cross over using the Angus L. MacDonald Bridge
or A. Murray MacKay Bridge. Neither task is physically demanding,
however teams that choose to use one of the bridges will miss a
great opportunity to enjoy an inexpensive Harbour Cruise.
Once there, teams must search for the glassed-in elevator
overlooking the harbour and find the elevator's maximum carrying
capacity (#### kgs) inscribed on the stainless steel panel. Divide
this number by 1000 and write it down as value (A). This
information will be required later in the race.
Road Block: A task in which usually only one member of
the Team may participate however in this version of the Race, all
members of the Team are free to help complete the task.
Road Block: Prime Minister Math
When the detour task is complete, teams must locate and make their
way to two historic cemeteries in Halifax. #1- Holy Cross Cemetery
(South Park St) and #2- Saint John’s Cemetery (Bedford
Highway/Windsor). Once there, teams must search through the
cemeteries to find the burial sites of two Canadian Prime
Ministers. Once they find them, teams must take a GPS reading at
the grave stones and save them as waypoints. This task is not as
difficult as it sounds and teams that do a little research could
save themselves a lot of time.
Teams must now figure out the destination cache waypoint for
this leg of the race by carrying out the following instructions:
Using the northing of the waypoint at the first grave site, add (A)
to the minutes, then subtract 1.502’ to determine the northing for
the next clue. Using the easting of the waypoint at the second
grave site, add (A) to the minutes, then subtract 2.337’ to
determine the easting for the next clue.
Once they have completed the math, teams must drive themselves
to the calculated waypoint located in Dingle Park on the Northwest
Arm, and search the area to find the clue box that contains the
next clue. The math calculations required are not difficult but
teams that don't double check their work may waste valuable time
searching in the wrong location.
The cache will have a log book for teams to record the
completion of the first leg of the race. The cache will also have
clues that allow teams to start the second leg of Race.
For the enjoyment of other teams following you, please take a
moment to rehide the caches a little better and in the exact same
spots you found them in.
The theme for trading items in this cache is coins, lapel pins,
etc from other places.
There is a Fast Forward on one of the legs. In this
version of the Race, the location of the Fast Forward will not be
obvious but if found, it will have the co-ordinates of the actual
cache location.
