Geocache Description:

free counters The fort is located on the edge of a cliff on Sydney Harbour, the cache is nearby.

Built between 1801 and 1803 the so called Georges Head battery was hewn by hand out of solid rock using a work gang of 44 convicts on what is now known as Obelisk Point near Middle Head. Georges Head is in fact 1km to the south west. This is the oldest remaining colonial fortification in Australia and was built to defend the entrance to Sydney harbour during the Napoleonic wars. Take bus 244 from Wynyard or there is a parking area on the corner of Middle Head road and Chowder Bay road, from there a track & walkway goes directly to the site. The whole area around Middle Head and Georges Head is covered with gun emplacements, mainly built from the 1870’s up until World War II, many have been restored but this, the very oldest, is neglected. Enjoy the search and when you are looking at the pick marks in the rock, imagine yourself there over 200 years ago, 13 years after the arrival of the First Fleet, so far from home on the other side of the world. UPDATE: July 2010 The NSW governor, Marie Bashir, officially reopened this site. finally this historic fort has been recognised. there is a new pathway from the carpark all the way to the fort.
