Geocache Description:

This cache is near the site of a Royal Hunting Lodge in Sloden Incosure. It is about a 2 mile walk from Ogdens or Abbots Well, Frogham. There are plenty of other starting places in Fritham, Broomy Lodge or Anses Wood. It is muddy in winter so proper walking boots recommended.

This cache can be approached from several directions. I prefer the walk from Ogdens which passes by the Hasley Inclosure Cache (GCRQ59). Allow about 2 hours, or a little more if you enjoy the view. A good circular walk could be had by returning to either Fritham or Ogdens/Frogham via Submarine Pens (GCMBXW). The cache is near to the site of "The Churchyard" and Royal Hunting Lodge

There is nothing left to see of the Royal Hunting Lodge but it's fun to root about to see where the site might have been.

I found the following reference which is, I think, the same place: Church Place, Old Sloden [...] is a low, wasted embankment; this is part of a small rectangular earthwork in Sloden named Church Place. The embankment is believed to be the eroded enclosure embankment and ditch of a 14th century royal hunting lodge. There are other "Church" places within the Forest and excavations have revealed small fragments of Purbeck and Cornish slate tiles at these sites. The lodge would have been a modest timber frame and plaster structure for the accommodation overnight of hunting parties. It is known that Edward III gave instructions in 1358 for 4 lodges to be constructed in the Forest.
