Hollywood is the oldest cemetery in Hot Springs Arkansas. As is common with many older cemeteries, the earliest records of internments and purchases of plots are missing. There were interments as early as 1845, and one in 1857 with an existing marker. Records exist of some plots being paid for in agricultural produce such as chickens, pigs, and crops. The main “old” cemetery is along Hollywood Ave. However, the 3 acre section on the south-east corner was also used. There are few records of that section, and the only sign of most of the plots are the sunken graves.
We do have permission to drive into the cemetery on the gravel road from the east side. We are considered invited guests. You should be able to get within less than 100 feet of the cache.
You can also park by the playground to the west and walk over. You will pass some interesting group plots from that direction. Children will enjoy playing in the park and walking on the walkway along the creek. There are restrooms by that parking area. Enjoy your visit.
You will find a written narrative in the cache from the property manager concerning his experiences with the property since it was acquired in 1988. I found it very interesting. There have definitely been some surprises in cleaning up the property. We have been asked to keep the narrative in the cache.
Another interesting thing to examine is the monument to Cornelia 340 ft to the NNE. Although she died in 1884, the monument showes none of the normal deteriation and no signs of maintenance. Go see why. I was suprised when I examined it.
