Lost in the Laurels Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Lostboy1966: I had almost forgotten what a nice little walk this was. I had my son along, and we hiked the stages with no particular sense of urgency, taking detours along the rocks and stream beds as the mood struck us. I had forgotten how much space a 50-cal box takes up in a backpack!

Thanks to everyone who made the trek. Hope you enjoyed it.

Geocache Description:

A three-stage multi in the southern portion of Devil’s Den. Park in the Pent Road lot in Weston, CT. Total distance from lot to final should be just over 1 mile, but not all of it on the trails!

What is this? Do I hear that some of you out there don’t like bushwhacking? Friends, you are missing one of the best parts of the hike!

This is a fairly mild dose of roughing it, actually. Bring a Preserve Map along, as there are options that can keep you on the trails (more or less) if you prefer, but doing so will make for a much longer walk. This is an instance where 'chasing the arrow' makes the hunt faster.

If there is more than a dusting of snow on the ground, the micro portion of this trip will become more difficult. I have added fairly detailed hints to help, just in case.

From the parking area the first micro can be found with 99% trail travel over .4 mile. This first container (a matchstick holder) has the coordinates to Stage Two. Two is a similar micro, also approachable by the trail after another .2 mile, and contains the numbers needed for the final.

The .3 mile push to the final is best accomplished by pure bushwhacking – there are no easy options for going back to the trails and finding a ‘quick’ way in. Head downhill from Stage Two and enjoy the hike. I suggest bringing a good walking stick along!

For An Easier Return Trip:
On the bright side, once you find the final you can strike out due East for less than .2 mile to hit a main trail – can’t miss it. Head south from there and follow the signs for a more casual walk back to the Parking Lot. Your total round trip should be about two miles.

Parking & Trail Notes:
Park in the main lot, which is at the end of Pent Road in Weston at N41 14.235 W073 23.760. Start your trek by following ‘Laurel Trail’ (go figure).

Please respect this beautiful preserve, and consider making a donation to The Nature Conservancy. In addition, a trail map can be downloaded here.
Enjoy!
