This cache can be easily reached by parking near to Bottesford railway station. The site of the cache is not far from an abandoned relic of the Cold War, a Royal Observer Corps Nuclear Fallout Monitoring Post and the view takes in the neighbouring two counties; indeed when the former WWII airfield was built, the front gate was in Nottinghamshire, the main runway in Leicestershire and the dispersed living accommodation in Lincolnshire, hence the cache name.
The Airfield stretches out to the North, the old main runway still clearly visible. As Bottesford Church spire was in line with the runway, along with the hill, a red lamp was afixed to the top of the spire during WWII, to try and encourage returning aircraft to miss both. A short but detailed description of the Bottesford airfield can be found here. http://www.raf-lincolnshire.info/bottesford/bottesford.htm . Unfortunately, the official RAF website no longer give historical information.
This is quite a popular dog walking route, it was almost dark when I hid the cache and still I was nearly muggled. One Caution about the Dog Walkers, take care along the bridleway as some of them have little consideration for others that walk the path, failing to keep their pooch mess off the walkway. The container has been replaced and is now a standard 2 Ltr kitchen container. Please ensure you log your visit to this cache correctly, including dropping off and picking up any TBs. thank you.
2023 update: In the close to 2 decades since this cache was first placed out, the the landscape has changed considerably. The ROC Post has all but disappeared under bushes and the original access path to the site has all but vanished. There is now a section of Crash Barrier installed, in an attempt to stop the eco-vandals roaring through on quad bikes etc. The fenced off field across the other side of the footpath is now a Natural Burial Site.
IMPORTANT Since this Cache was first placed, several Cachers have seen fit to place it in a different location to where it is supposed to be. PUT IT BACK EXACTLY WHERE YOU FOUND IT. Yu will see it now has a mounting to show where it needs to be.
Jul 2024 - Cache has been moved to a new location to try and stop muggling...
