The ‘Incline’ was part of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Railway and this line was the only link between Rosedale and Battersby Junction marshalling yards
It didn’t carry passengers but was built to transport the iron ore from workings in Rosedale and Farndale to the blast furnaces in the Cleveland area.
The principle of the incline system was that full wagons of iron ore descending the incline were attached to empty wagons at the bottom via a system of steel ropes running around a 14ft brake drum, hauling the empty wagons up the … 1 in 5 gradient. Sandstone blocks still remain to show the position of the drum house.
Ingleby Incline closed in 1929 after closure of the ironstone mining at Rosedale.
The incline still remains as a lasting reminder, and its broad cut in the landscape is used as a footpath.
Something to look out for , a very interesting piece of what could be called art can be spotted carved in the rocks; it shows a bird and a man in a tall hat. If anyone can tell me its significance I would be very grateful.
The cache is a medium sized plastic sandwich box
