A magnetic keyholder. The cache is on the bridge. Park at the bottom and walk up.
A great vantage point!
A major facility for the Burlington Northern - Santa Fe Railroads. At the time of the merger you could go to the southwest side of the yard and get a preview of the new paint schemes they were expermenting with.
Not too long ago they sorted the boxcars utilizing a 'Hump Hill' where the train would be backed up the hill, the cars uncoupled, and using gravity the car would roll down the other side of the hill to be sorted onto sidings. They would couple with the other cars with a loud bang.
This yard removed the hump hill and it mainly deals with containers and trailers now.
I would often come here with my railfan friends or my kids just to watch the cars roll and bang.
Great fun.
A Special Treat. The Amtrak #5 California Zephyr comes thru on the north side of the yard after leaving downtown at 1:50 pm. It should reach this point at 2:00. Please post the time if you see it.
Special Treat #2. Drive west on Ogden until you reach Austin. Awesome taco's!
Enjoy!
