Kuirau Lake, easy walk to find container, now at ground level. No need to climb fence.
According to legend this lake was called Tawakahu and could be bathed in. A young lady called Kuirau would swim in it, but there was an old taniwha who would watch her, and could not bear it, an one day he seized her. This made the gods angry so they made the pool boil to get rid of him.
From that day on the lake has been called Kuirau in her memory.
