Geocache Description:

The is an easy cache located along the abandoned West Shore Railroad track in Elba, N.Y. that is now used for a snowmobile trail during the winter. You are looking for a 30 ammo cal. box.

The West Shore Railroad came through Elba in 1884, forever changing the little quiet Village of Pine Hill. The name of the Village of Pine Hill was changed to Elba at that time under incorporation by New York State.

The railroad laid 6.125 miles of track within the township at a cost of $50,000 with the work being done mostly by Italian immigrants. The original freight house remains up the road and is now the site of Andy's Pizza. The passenger depot was removed in 1964 when the railroad abandoned the line and removed the tracks.

The property owner wishes that you use the following coordinates for parking N43 04.219 W078 11.105 and be mindful not to block off any access to the driveway.
To the north of the parking coordinates once was the site of the Atlas Milk Plant which produced evaporated milk. During WWII the plant operated under a government contract supplying canned vegetables for the armed services. This building burned to the ground in 1999 and only the giant yellow brick smoke stack and small freight unloading barn remain.

Permission has been granted to use this site for the cache and is posted on both sides of the trail. Caution: THIS CACHE CAN NOT BE DONE DURING DEER SEASON by express concern of the property owner.
