Geocache Description:

A woodland walk with scenic views over the bay as you near the cache site.

Shell Bay woodland is owned by Elie Estate but managed by the Forestry Commission. It is very popular for horse riding and dog walking and gives rise to lovely views over Largo Bay and back towards Shell Bay and the caravan site.

As a child I have many fond memories of lazy sunny summers spent playing here. My parents would send us off to walk here while they drove round and put up a wee tent. We played for hours in the sand dunes and beach while they sat and read the Sunday papers with their peace only interrupted by us requiring food stops. On some Sundays a red flag was flown at various strategic points to indicate access denied so that this whole area could be used as a firing range (not sure for whom) and part of the enchantment for us was competing to find the most used shells in the following weeks.

Wild life is aplenty in this area, we even saw a heron fishing in the Cocklemill Burn which was surprising considering the noise the baby was making (think she still wanted to play with her Christmas presents!)

The cache is at the above location but this is at the start of a lovely circular walk over the sand dunes towards Ruddons Point and beyond which we were unable to do as it was not really buggy friendly. Please continue to explore this area after finding the cache as the bay opens out when you get to the beach and the sand would be envied on a Spanish Resort.

Beware of the sand due cliffs if you are taking small children. Sand Martins will love nesting in them in the summer but they do make for an unstable walkways.

Over the winter months this spot is reported to attract large numbers of wintering waders and sea duck including important numbers of Scoter, Long-Tailed Duck, Eider and Goldeneye.

Parking can be found at N56° 11.644 W002° 51.400.

Cache container is a 3 litre box so will hold larger swaps and travel bugs.
