Geocache Description:

This is an offset cache which requires the geocacher to visit 5 locations on the campus of Michigan Technological University in order to obtain the final coordinates. The first 5 locations pose no real difficulties in terrain, but you will be required to do some arithmetic to come up with the final coordinates. The final stage is located along a short trail which is not plowed, but should still be accessible in winter.

You will probably want to park near the Memorial Union Building or the Library to be near the first location. If you attempt this cache during the week before 5pm, it may be difficult to find free parking; you may need to find a metered spot or park in the visitor's lot near the Administration Building. If you attempt this cache after 5pm or during the weekend, free parking should be plentiful.

Michigan Technological University traces its origin to 1885, when the state of Michigan founded the Michigan Mining School in response to the Keweenaw Peninsula's copper mine boom of the late 19th century; the Mining School served to train mining engineers to operate the local copper mines efficiently. Initially, the Michigan Mining School consisted of four faculty members and 23 students on the second floor of the Houghton Fire Hall. In 1897, the school expanded and changed its name to the Michigan College of Mines, only to be later renamed to the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. The college grew into a multidisciplinary university, and finally adopted the monicker Michigan Technological University in 1964.

The coordinates of the cache are

N 47°07.ABC
W088°32.DEF

where A, B, C, D, E, and F are to be determined by following the clues below:

A: Go to N 47°07.151 W088°32.930. There is a sign just above eye level which starts with the words "A Senior..." Subtract the first date from the second date on this sign to get the value for "A"

B: B=A

C: Go to N 47°07.135 W088°32.830. Find the weight of the object at this location. This is a four digit number. Add the individual digits together and subtract 21 from the sum to get the value of "C"

D: Go to N 47°07.106 W088°32.839. Find the only number on this sign that is not in any part of a date. Take only the second digit of this number and add 1 to get the value of "D"

E: Go to N 47°07.087 W088°32.731. At this location, you will need to look through a fence to find some writing. Find the following sentance and fill in the blank: "Reorder when gauge reads __." Multiply the first digit of this number by itself to get the value of "E"

F: Go to N 47°07.108 W088°32.588. Count the windows on this side of the building (don't count the doors or the rounded window above the doors). To the number of windows, subtract 4, then divide by 4 to get the value of "F"

Now that you have the final coordinates, make your way to the cache site. The cache is a 1.8 liter plastic container just off a small trail. The cache was placed in the winter so it should be accessible unless the site gets drifted over by heavy snow.

Starting contents: Potato shooter gun, squeeky dog toy, mini Slinky, foam disk shooter, logbook, pen and pencil. All contents fit in the container without shoving if packed correctly.

First and Second Finders Prizes: Michigan Tech window decal and Michigan Tech flashlight/keychain. First finder gets choice.
