It’s recommended you spend
a weekend in Greyton to fully appreciate the attractions of this
small village, but should this not be possible, it is only just
over an hour by car from Cape Town. There are several caches
hereabouts, but this one is designed for the persistently
contemplative and lesser active among us. It is a combination in
that there are multiple stages, a mega-nano to find, and what can
best be described as a hybrid/retro letterbox cache. The posted
co-ordinates are in the surrounding vicinity but of no practical
value. Bring some paper and a pen/pencil. You’ll need an hour or
two, and it’ll need to be between 09H00 and 15H00.
The first task is to
complete the Sudoku grid below, and use it as a template for
co-ordinates you’ll need it as you go along. You’ll notice there
are no 7’s. If you are struggling, email us and we’ll provide an
extra digit or two. When finished convert into a grid, labelled A
to I across and 1 to 9 down. You now have a template for
co-ordinates you’ll need as you go along. For example your grid
co-ordinate C3 ought correspond with the Sudoku number
9.

Commence at S34
0(E6).(C2)(C8)(E4) E 019 3(H8).(D9)(G5)(I5).
You are standing in front
of ‘The (E9 across) (F19 down)’ B&B No. ab Main Rd. There is an
old wooden (D1 down) outside, (D2)(F8) (A19 down)s per wheel, with
a (A19 across) sitting in it.
Cross over Kloof St. and
proceed to S34 0(H7).(E5)(D5)(C6) E 019 3(C9).(I6)(A4)(A5)
whereupon you should find yourself at another hostelry, The (K2
down) (H2 across), formerly a police station. It has (C5) flag(H18
down) and the date on the façade apices is cdef.
Look across at the diagonal
corner. There rests a ‘Municipal Appliance’ in (P8 down) Street,
originating from (A6 down), Lancashire, UK. Is it a type of (A23
across)? Look once more across the road. Notice there are m
telephone boxes. Note the 2nd and 4th digits
of each (ignore the dialling code).
Carry on across West St. to
S34 0(A1).(4th telephone digit)(E9)(F7) E 019
36.(2nd telephone digit)(C7)(I8). How many clock faces
(g) are there and how many numerals in total (h). Across the road
‘(N2 down )1 for (J17 across)’.
Proceeding down Main St.,
past the Saturday Morning Market, go to S34 0(G3).(E8)(G4)(E2) E
019 36.(C4)(H4)(B2). Here is (O16 down)s, est. ijkl. Once again you
will see m telephone boxes. Note the 3rd digit of each
number. Across the road is the Greyton Hotel, est. npqr, its (B3
across) is on the corner.
If you cross over High St.,
and look to the west, Uitkyk Kop looms large. This is the highest
peak in the immediate vicinity, and the views from the summit make
it well worth the climb. There is of course the added bonus of a
further (L10 across) GCD994
.
Diagonally across from (O16
down)s is a (I14 across) house, No. st. This was the scene of a
murder in recent years and is now the home of a local artist, whose
work can be seen at the various galleries around the
village.
At S34 0k.0mb E 019
3(e+f).gea q more flagpoles can be seen. S34 03.t7m E 019
36.kd(h/b) is the intersection of (A8 across) and (G9 down). The
old English type sign above head height nearby shows a (J20 down)
and (C18 down). If you face west and look down (G9 down) St. the
Moravian Church can be seen.
Also at this intersection
can be seen leiwater furrows, falling into which is a heinous crime
in these parts.
Carry on walking along Main
to S34 03.0jr E 019 (h minus 12).fsb that will bring you to a
National (M15 down). There is a small plaque on the wall with a
small cross in the centre and the motto (J10 down) Vires
above. The co-ordinates can be extremely variable here, but there
ought be no doubt re. the objective in question.
Now you’ll need to retrace
your steps for a little while and head for S34 0(D6).t(h plus 30) E
0np kw.(G2)(H2)(B5). At these co-ordinates is a (A11 across) but
won’t accept a (J22 across).
S34 t3.t(H1)(A8) E 0cd
36.g(h minus l) brings you to the (E11 down) across the road. At
the entrance is another (A11 across), and also, no longer in use.
We suggest you rest awhile here, have a drink and a bite to eat
whilst you ponder your walk and clues thus far. While waiting for
your refreshments to arrive, browse the walls inside, and you will
see a painting of a (14C down) and her (D1 across), with vivid
orange and (C16 across) colouration, as well as a sign near the
kitchen which bears the prior name of the (E11 down), Die (A6
across), (I3)(A7)vw.
Oh, and our moniker is (D4
across).
Once replenished, restored, and walking again, you should
be bearing due south, and on the way have a fine view of Abdol’s
Kop (GCRR1F and the
closer a BORT GCRR1T both placedby Tricky Vicky &
Mickey) with Perdekop (currently
cacheless) behind. At the time of writing, both these were still
available as FTF’s for the fitter cacher.
Head for S34 03.trm E 019
36.req and note the name of the retail outlet (M6 down) and another
telephone box should be near : note the last 4 digits
xyzo.
Nearly finished and it’s
time to go S34 03.0(F5)(G6) E 019 36.3(B8)(I3) where your completed
crossword will help you decode the following:
