Geocache Description:

“Michigan Spirit Quest”

The Michigan Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries built by MICHIGAN Pioneers. This series is inspired by and is a continuation of the Indiana Spirit Quest caches created by SixDogTeam. In just over two and a half years, the SPIRIT QUEST has grown to over five hundred and fifty caches and the hiders have grown to twenty-five cacher teams in 3 states and one province, most of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 1,000 cachers have logged over 20,000 finds. One cache machine found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

"THE PALM SUNDAY OUTBREAK"

Welcome to East Gilead Cemetery in Gilead Township, Michigan. This cache is named in remembrance of the Palm Sunday Tornado Outbreak on April 11, 1965 – one of the worst storm clusters to hit the area. Within 12 hours, 47 confirmed tornadoes tore across Michigan, Indiana and Ohio killing 271 people and insuring 3,400 others. The tornado that hit East Gilead was one of two that touched down in Branch County. As a result of these two tornadoes alone, 19 people died, 200 were injured and just under 200 homes were destroyed.

East Gilead Cemetery is the final resting place of many founding fathers and mothers of the area. At least two Civil War veterans, Byron J. Lang – 9th Cavalry Company I and James A. Furguson – 5th Cavalry Company M are buried here.

George W. Hill, (b: 04 Sep 1834, died 18 Mar 1899)

Also buried in East Gilead Cemetery is George W. Hill. When he was a young man, Hill moved with his family to Little Cooley, PA. There, he married Sarah Lewis. They had two daughters, Polly died at birth and Marian (Bidwell).Three years after the death of first wife, he married Malinda Swihart, the union to which Arden was born along with George M. and Dora, who died giving birth in 1918. When he moved his family to Michigan, George W. Hill served as Pastor of the United Brethren Church in Bethel until he died in 1889.
