Readington Ramble Series: Readington Township is a wonderful place to live. We wanted to create a series of caches that would give you a little tour of the Township and provide you with a little history as well. We’ll also point out the existing caches that you can visit while in the area. So to begin, you should know the basic facts. “July 15, 1730 was the official birth date of Readington Township. Created by Royal Charter as Readings, or Readings Town, it wasn't until 1798 that it became Readington Township. Containing about 48 square miles, ours is the largest Township in the County of Hunterdon and one of the largest in the State of New Jersey.” (From Readington Township History, by Stephanie B. Stevens, Township Historian, 1993)
Other caches included in the Readington Ramble Series: Hill of the Mill, Way Out of Whitehouse, Old Dutch Farm, Rockafellow Rapids, Give my regards to Broad Street, Higginsville Hike, Summer Fun.

There were no signs posted giving the hours Hillcrest Park is open. It may close at night. It is a very busy park during soccer and baseball seasons. We’ve spent many mornings and afternoons here with our boys playing soccer. There is hunting near by on private property. There is no need to get onto private property to find this cache. We wanted to bring you to this area because this is where Readington’s history began at the Village of Readington. You may want to visit the Readington Post Office located at N 40° 31.137 W 74° 44.308, the site of Readington Village. Your best approaches are near Field no. 4 or along the side of the dog park. Short bushwhack from mowed area will be needed.

Our heritage is Dutch-German with the Dutch being the earliest and most populous. Original settlements of Dutch farmers took place in and around the Village of Readington, where a mill was erected (circa 1710 - 1715) by Adrian Lane. By 1738 the Dutch Reformed Church of North Branch moved west to Readington, no doubt because of the greater number of members residing there. Today's Readington Dutch Reformed Church replaces two earlier church buildings. As the population increased, a school was built; an inn and a store completed the Little Dutch Settlement. Readington Village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Remaining are five eighteenth century houses, a portion of the mill wall, the store, church and cemetery, inn, two school houses and several early nineteenth century houses.
