Readington Ramble # 7
The hike to this cache will take you along an abandoned railroad
bed along the South Branch of the Raritan River. This will bring
you to the Southeastern part of our Township.
Readington Ramble Series: Readington Township is a wonderful
place to live. We wanted to create a series of caches that would
give you a little tour of the Township and provide you with a
little history as well. We’ll also point out the existing caches
that you can visit while in the area. So to begin, you should know
the basic facts. “July 15, 1730 was the official birth date of
Readington Township. Created by Royal Charter as Readings, or
Readings Town, it wasn't until 1798 that it became Readington
Township. Containing about 48 square miles, ours is the largest
Township in the County of Hunterdon and one of the largest in the
State of New Jersey.” (From Readington Township History, by
Stephanie B. Stevens, Township Historian, 1993)
Other caches included in the Readington Ramble Series:
Hillcrest Hideaway, Hill of the Mill, Way Out of Whitehouse, Old
Dutch Farm, Rockafellow Rapids, Give my regards to Broad Street,
Summer Fun.
Park at N 40° 30.593 W 74° 47.065 There is room for two cars here
(if you have small cars). There is a short (10 foot) section that
crosses a stream on two steel rails across the trail. It is easy to
get across, but you should be sure to supervise children for the
crossing.
This trail was a surprise to us, and we have lived in Readington
Township for over 25 years. We think you will really enjoy the
pleasant .6 mile hike to the cache. There is limited hunting in the area. This is “The Man’s” favorite in the Readington Ramble
Series.
