Ghost towns are everywhere in our state. This easy micro is located
in the Washington County ghost town of Strawberry.
Ghost towns were once thriving towns, especially a boomtown of the
American West that has been completely abandoned, are prevalent in
Kansas. This cache is hidden close to a marker dedicated to a ghost
town, Strawberry Kansas in Washington County.
Strawberry Kansas was named for the wild strawberries growing in
the area. The first settlers included the Peter Gieber family in
May 1861. (The year Kansas became the 34th state.) In 1868, the
settlement included a post office, school district # 18, a general
store and a blacksmith shop. Five families lived in the town.
Gieber Grove was used for 4th of July celebrations and as a
campground for passing Indians.
In 1909, the General Store added a skating rink and a dance
pavilion. This lead to the Strawberry legend as people traveled
great distance to dance to name bands performing here. In 1951, a
new road and a bridge brought about the demise of the town. You can
drive right to this cache on paved roads. Easy access day or night.
Take time to read the marker and learn about the history of this
ghost town.
