Denso Marston Nature Reserve Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines: "You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing."

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.
Many thanks,
DalesmanX

Geocache Description:

A three hectare strip of land designated as 'wash land', now managed as a nature reserve

In 1989 Denso Marston Ltd, manufacturers of radiators and oil coolers, bought a large factory in Shipley called IMI Radiators Ltd. When the company extended its factory for the production of car radiators in 1991, the company made the decision to create the Denso Marston Wildlife Park at the same time, on a piece of land hidden away between the factory extension and the river Aire.

If you are looking for herds of wildebeest roaming across the Serengeti, then this is not the wildlife park for you. This is a suburban strip of scrub and woodland with a factory on one side and a river, pylons and railway track on the other. Nevertheless, what the careful observer will find here is a selection of native and migrant birds, insects and mammals.

In 2005, 60 species of bird were seen here, together with 11 species of mammals, 14 species of butterfly and 7 species of dragonfly. A retained warden and monthly volunteer work parties maintain the park for the benefit of the plants and animals that shelter in it. The 2005 species lists can be found in the geocache, together with the 2006 program of events for work parties and wildlife walks with the warden.

To get there, park in the lay-by at SE 16499 39074, and cross the road to the public footpath opposite. The road is busy and fast; cross using the traffic island just up from the lay-by. Head across the field (can be muddy) for the stile at SE 16711 39014 where you turn right to enter the wildlife park.

Please keep to the paths and take care to avoid disturbing the wildlife. In particular, keep away from nesting boxes and other obvious habitat areas, and keep dogs under control.

Thank you to the Denso Marston Wildlife Park warden and Consultative Group for their kind permission to place this geocache in the park.
