Geocache Description:

As the title says its in a wood near Epwell.

This can be a really quick cache and dash, except when the tree's are in full bloom then you may have trouble getting a fix on your GPS.

The tiny village of Epwell is tucked away off the main road between Banbury and Shipston-on-Stour. It is a picturesque village with just 101 houses, St Anne’s Church, a village hall and a pub. A tour of the village takes visitors through the square surrounded by cottages built from Hornton stone and down the quiet lanes through a small ford and back again in just ten minutes. The village began as a tiny Saxon settlement more than 1,000 years ago and was originally a rest stop on one of the well established pre-Roman salt roads that criss-crossed the country. Its original name was Eoppas Well because it was a resting place for travellers and the site of a well. Springs still flow under the village and many of the residents have wells in their gardens. Two functioning public wells still remain. Residents describe the village as quiet, but thriving with a strong community spirit. In the 17th century Epwell was a large village and reputedly a local hotspot with 11 pubs. However, the village became smaller following a fire in the 18th century. The village has only recently began to grow once again with new housing.
