Not all architectural masterpieces have to be grand...
In 1939 a young British architect came to Sweden riding on a rusty
old bicycle. He wanted to study the Swedish modernism/functionalism
within architecture and design. When the war broke out he decided
to stay in Sweden and was joined by his wife and daughter.
The young family needed a place of their own but were short on
funds. During the hard winter of 1941-42 the architect, using scrap
material and his unique skills, managed to build a small hut in
Solängen, Lissma, at a total cost of under 10 000 SEK. It was
ingeniously constructed, well insulated and used every available
bit of space. It was compact living in the 40:s. The name of the
project was Lådan (the Box).
As his fame grew and his family as well Lådan was abandoned
for a bigger house. It was forgotten and ultimately demolished. In
1989 it was reconstructed in Lovö by a society in support of
the Architectural Museum and given to the museum. The public has
free access to the exterior of the house and the beautiful
surroundings makes it well worth a visit.
The architect achieved not only national but also international
fame. In Sweden he designed Aula Magna for the university of
Stockholm, Ekerö centrum, Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg and Borga
Fjällhotell in Dorotea for example. In England some examples
of his work are The Byker Development in Newcastle, Greenwich
Millennium Village and The Ark in London. The architect passed away
peacefully on the 17 March 2005 and found his final resting place
at Lovö Church, not far from here.
Have you guessed his name?
If you come here by car, please park your vehicle at the nearby
