Burr Pond State Park Loop
How Geocaching Works
Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer
This cache is hidden at Burr Pond State Park in Torrington. To encourage you to hike the loop around the lake, we've hidden two caches, each with one half of the clue info for this stage. You get two smilies for this one! If you've never been caching at Burr Pond there are three other hides around the lake, and a virtual on the road to the park. A potential 6-bagger from one parking spot: how can you resist? Park at N41 52.191 W73 05.612, the parking area inside the park. It was plowed right after the latest snowstorm. You can also park at N41 52.453 W73 05.669, which is the boat launch parking area.
The hike will take you clockwise on a 3 mile loop around scenic Burr Pond, following trails maintained by the Connecticut Forest & Parks Association (CFPA). The grades are gentle, although there are several streams and brooks that empty into the pond, so wear your waterproof boots.
From the parking coordinates inside the park you can head southeast to a bridge across the outlet brook at N41 52.157 W73 05.535. This puts you on a blue blazed trail that completely encircles the lake. There are white dot and yellow dot trails that branch off at different spots along the loop, but both of our caches are located along the blue trail. From the boat launch parking area you can follow the blue trail in either direction to make the loop.
A trail map can be found at (DEP Burr Pond Map). ).
If you decide to short-cut the hike by crossing the lake in winter time, please be absolutely certain about the ice thickness - it's a big pond!
If you bring your canine hiking buddy, park regulations indicate that you'll need a leash.
The park is open from sunrise to sunset.
