The Maltese Cross is a popular 3 to 4 hours walk in the beautiful Cederberg mountains
Most people doing this walk would stay either at Algeria, the Cape Nature conservation campsite (ph 027-4822812), or in the Dwarsrivier cottages at Sandrift (027 4822825 sanddrif@cederbergwine.com). Permits can be obtained from either place. If you have a "wild card" you don't need a permit but you still need to get the key to the gate from Algeria or Dwarsrivier.... otherwise you'll have a very long walk along the road to the parking area!! The path from the car park is quite clear. Follow this all the way as it winds up the hillside to the saddle over to the left. Theres only one place you might go wrong but this path leading down to the right has a small barrier of rocks across it to indicate that you mist go left and up not down and right. Doing it in January, we started walking at 6am and took lots of water. Enjoy! Left a spirit-level keyring, some dice, some press-stick and a fridge magnet, plus of course a logbook and pencil.
