Geocache Description:

Cache is a large ammo box located in the Town of Minerva's Courtney Park. This location was the site of the historic Alpine Hotel. We felt it was a good location for a new hotel catering to Travel Bugs and their stories.

Alpine Hotel (Source: Minerva: A History of a Town in Essex Co., N.Y., prepared by the Minerva Historical Society)

Before 1860, Henry Bradley built what became known as the Alpine Hotel in Olmstedville. In 1865, he sold the hotel to Patrick Sullivan., and ran the hotel until his death in 1906. There was a dance hall on the second floor, and the hotel became the scene of many gay parties for the townspeople as well as the city people who began in the 1890’s to come to the mountains for their vacations

James McSweeney was the next owner of the Alpine. In 1915, the hotel burned and was not rebuilt until 1921, and it burned again in 1927. In 1940, the unfinished building was bought by Mr. and Mrs, Bernard Courtney and made into a modern apartment house.
