Traditional cache in a Tupperware container measuring 200mm x 150mm
x 50mm The suggested starting point is the car park by the river in
Garstang at N53° 53.906 W2° 46.268 Toilets, pubs and cafés close
by.
An easy flat walk of just under a mile, very suitable for children
– but wear wellies after rain as there is one muddy section to
cross! As you cross over the River Wyre look down to the left to
see the flood barrier. This is raised in times of heavy rain to
hold the river water back and therefore flood the surrounding
fields instead of flooding villages further down river. The
embankment you will walk along was once part of the Garstang to
Knott End railway which began it’s life in December 1870. From
where the line branches off the main London to Glasgow line there
was 10½ miles of track taking the locomotives, known locally as the
Pilling Pig, through Garstang and out across the Fylde to Pilling
and Knott End – on -Sea. The Pilling Pig was so called because
local farmers said the noise of it’s whistle reminded them of a
dying pig! Unfortunately, the line closed in 1963. A good
continuation to this walk would be to carry on to Greenhalgh Castle
Farm and go down the lane passing the castle and return through
Garstang town centre. Total walk just under 2½ miles.Learn more
about the Pilling Pig railway at www.pillingpig.co.uk. A WORD OF
WARNING!! Something in the area does strange things to a GPS! Maybe
the proximity to the main electrified railway line or the nearby
pylons. Rest assured the co-ordinates supplied are spot on when
checked against a map.
