The first multi-cache entirely within the district of Tofino. A
relatively easy multi-cache that can be done in about one hour
(walking). Not including the great walking tour of Tofino's
waterfront, while visiting the 5 stages of this cache, you will see
2 old ship's anchors, 4 benchmarks, and (hopefully) one container
at the end.
NOTE June 9, 2007- After some damage and vandalism, I have
re-mapped portions of this cache. I have made it a little easier,
with only one actual container to find, and made the math a bit
simpler. You should be able to do the math on a piece of paper. No
calculator required.
Each location begins with North 49 09. and West 125 54. You
will need to go to each location to get the clues to find out the
last 3 digits for the latitude and longitude for the next
location. The container is a regular lock 'n' lock painted
green.
Part 1- Go to the listed co-ordinates. Find the benchmark.
Note the 4 digit number (the year I think). Subtract 1748 from it
for the latitude.
Now, from the number that you got for the latitude, add 409 for the
longitude.
Part 2- You should be looking at the anchor from the Hera.
Read the plaque. Take the year that she sank and subtract 1655 for
the latitude.
The Hera sank with enough beer on board to get all of Tofino drunk
for a week. Take the number (of bottles) and divide it by 100. Then
subtract 16 for the longitude.
Part 3- Start off standing on the dock at the co-ordinates
you worked out. You should be right beside a lamp post. In the
concrete near the base of the post, you will see an old benchmark.
We won't use it for this cache, because it is hardly readable, but
I thought you might want to see it. While leaning over the railing
admiring the old benchmark, look about 10-15 feet to your left to
locate another one at roughly the same elevation.
Look at the last 2 numbers on the benchmark. Treat them as a 2
digit number. Add 134 and you will have the latitude. Add 16 to
your latitude and you will have the longitude.
Part 4- You should be standing in front of another anchor
now. Also, if you are interested, there is a benchmark in the
concrete right beside the anchor.
Add 153 to the length of the ship for the latitude.
Subtract 226 from the number of Chinese immigrants that were
dropped off in San Fransisco for the longitude.
Now you have the co-ordinates for the final cache container.
Part 5- You will have to move a few small rocks to get at
the final container.
I hope you enjoyed your tour of the "Tofino Waterfront"
Happy Hunting,
3Watts
P.S. If you bring your compass with you to the final location, you
will be able to get a bearing to my mystery cache
