Geocache Description:

This is a relatively relaxing hike along the McCormack Trail in Dundas Valley. This cache has a bit of a theme as it’s (original) contents are all examples of animal species that have been listed as Endangered Species, by the Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (C.I.T.E.S.). It is important to remember that all species of animals and plants play a roll in maintaining a viable ecosystem, and it is up to us to ensure their survival. There are currently over 30,000 species of animals and plants, around the world, on the endangered species list, and there are currently 169 countries listed as signatories to C.I.T.E.S.

Many of the species listed under C.I.T.E.S. can be found in Canada and include many species of whales, raptors, sturgeon and orchids (just to name a few). Most of these species are endangered because of human activities including destruction of habitat, poaching, and commercial trade. Signatory countries all have laws and stiff penalties to help put a stop to the exploitation of endangered species. Visit WWW.CITES.CA if you’d like to read more about C.I.T.E.S. and the commercial trade of endangered species.

This cache is located on Hamilton Conservation Authority lands, and it provides an excellent opportunity to escape the hustle and bussle of the busy city, and enjoy nature at it’s best. I have frequently seen deer, raptors (including great-horned owls) and numerous species of song birds, in the area, and once in a while, if you listen closely, you might just hear the local family of coyotes yipping to one another. Please treat this land with respect….stick to the trails as much as possible (there is no need to wander off the trail until you are in the vicinity of the cache)…..take the time to pick up any little bits of trash you come across…..visit WWW.HAMRCA.ON.CA for more information about the Hamilton Conservation Authority parks and trails. Enjoy the cache!

Parking is on Governor’s Rd. N43 15.290 W079 59.849 (Do not block the service gate please)
