Formation of juniper grove is a result of complex interaction of human activity, the climate and soil conditions. Former pasturing played main role in its development. Shaping out of pasturing areas usually happened by deforestation. The grazing livestock avoided pricking, thorny plants so these plants were able to reproduce itself more effectively. Giving up pasturing the plant became widespread. So these juniper phytocoenosis is not really "wild".

This area is 3417 ha., and has been protected since 1974. The protection is because of its particular flora. Characteristic phytocoenosi: temporary carrs with sphagnum, juniperous sandmoor wildgreens, acid sandstone greens, alder carrs, birch-woods, moss. Rare species: osmund royal (Osmunda regalis), allseed (Radiola linoides), water purslane (Ludwigia palustris), trailing St John's-wort (Hypericum humifusum), creeping marshwort (Apium repens), mosses and ferns. Fauna of wild juniper grove of Barcs is rich, more than 700 butterflies were described among others.

The juniper groves are open to the public. Highly protected nature reserve areas are: Széles-tó (Wide-lake), Nagyberek (Large-marsh), side of Rigóc-brook, Csikota. They can be visited only by permission.
