This is a Multi-Cache that will bring you to the river crossing. The first cache is a micro that will contain the coordinates for the parking as well as final coordinates to a regular size ammo box.
The first coordinates giving will bring you to Admiral Farragut’s Basin, located on Fish River. This site was used as a major river crossing location from the early 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. Intermittently as a site for pontoon bridges and ferries, but later and more extensively, as a ferry site. These structures were used to span what was known to the first Spanish Colonists as Rio Pescadore or Fish River.
In 1865 the Union Army, fresh from their capture of Fort Morgan and after camping at the springs at Magnolia Springs, chose this site to cross fish river enroute to Spanish Fort and the Battle of Blakeley. They constructed a Pontoon bride at this site, which was used by their horse-drawn artillery and supply wagons.
Union gunboats sailed up Fish River to intercept confederate forces but had to turn around at the wide part of the river located approximately 1,000 yards north of this site. That site, which can be seen from this location, thus came to be known as Farragut’s Basin.
After you find the micro container, you will need to use the coordinates contained in order to cross the river and find the cache.
Congrats to RESE and KREWE FTF 1/27/2006!
