Geocache Description:

"As a huge Stone is sometimes seen to lie
Couched on the bald top of an eminence;
Wonder to all who do the same espy,
By what means it could thither come, and whence;
So that it seems a thing endued with sense:
Like a Sea-beast crawled forth, that on a shelf
Of rock or sand reposeth, there to sun itself."

W. Wordsworth, 1807, The Leech Gatherer

An erratic is a boulder transported and deposited by a glacier. As anyone who has ever driven from Terence Bay through to Peggy's Cove knows, the retreat of Ice Age glaciers left this sparse area littered with erratics, many of which are 'perched' or 'balanced' rocks as well - large boulders balanced on one or more smaller rocks. This cache will take you to the location a pair of very large erratics, which rest against each other, and on a number of smaller rocks below. Round trip hike is 1.6k. There is a fairly steep incline at the beginning of the trail, but it is easy going after that.

I love this terrain, and the rugged beauty of our coastal areas. Hikers and dog-walkers appear to love it too, so be on the lookout for muggles. As the cache is not far from the trail, please ensure that it is COMPLETELY concealed from sight when you replace it. The cache is on the ground, so not very winter-friendly in that way, but I have provided an obvious man-made clue.

Please take the time to check out a curiosity that is very close to the cache - the Balancing Rock. This is not a naturally occuring balanced rock. This one has had human help. Lone Digger first heard about this rock about 15 years ago on the news, along with speculation that it may have been a prank executed by local engineering students. He was planning to put a cache here, in hopes that another cacher might be able to shed light on the mystery, but I scooped his location Coords are listed in the 'additional coordinates' section. Thanks to Lone Digger for the information, and the photos of the rock.

Parking coords are also provided. The trail is directly across the road. Any other access point could mean an nasty bushwhack.

Bonus: Just as my nearby cache "Peggy and I" provides a view of beautiful Peggy's Cove from the north-west, this cache offers another vantage point, from the east.
