Halifax was the site of the first zoological garden in North America north of Mexico. Established in 1847 by Andrew Downs on 100 acres of land, the gardens contained many species of birds, native and exotic fauna, an aquarium, a museum, and a greenhouse. The gardens were one of the favourite resorts of Haligonians until they were sold in 1868. You can read more about the park here.
