Welcome to the 1st cache by "Blatherskite"
The location of this cache is 200 kilometres north-east of Melbourne in a wide valley surrounded by mountain ranges. To the west lie the Strathbogies and the Paps; to the north-west Mt. Samaria; to the north the Tolmie plataeu; to the east the Great Dividing Range with Mt. Buller, Mt. Stirling, Timbertop; and to the south the low hills of the Blue Range. These mountains give rise to the Broken, Howqua, Jamieson, Goulburn, Delatite and Big Rivers. The first white settlement took place in 1839 when squatters Watson and Hunter named the district "Devil's River". The first land sales of town lots took place in 1854. The town was originally named "The Battery" because of the similarity between Mt. Battery and a gun emplacement. The name was changed in 1856 after the English town near Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. The town has had a colourful history of squatters, selectors, bushrangers, gold miners, packers, coachbuilders, etc. It is famous for its magnificent scenery, farms, cattle, horses and hospitality.
