Geocache Description:

The cache is located near the monument overlooking Port Eynon bay, the Salthouse and Overton Mere in Gower. ** 14 May 2017 The cache has moved **

"The Salthouse remains are those of a salt factory which closed in about 1657. Salt water was evaporated in shallow chambers, then boiled in large lead or iron pans until salt crystallised out. The salt was used mainly for curing meat and fish. These buildings succeeded the previous mansion of Salthouse made famous by John Lucas in the 16th century, the local 'Robin Hood'".

Starting at Port Eynon car park, follow the path behind the dunes or along the beach as far as the Youth Hostel. Turn right here and follow a track between hedges up to the headland, passing over debris from old limestone quarries, to reach a large granite monolith, erected as a memorial to two founder members of the Gower Society, Gwent Jones and Stephen Lee. It is through the Society that so much of Gower has been saved for us to enjoy today. Nearby is the intriguing walled-in cleft, Culver Hole. This can be found by continuing 250 metres towards Overton in order to descend to see it from shore level. Its use is unknown but suggestions include a dovecote, a smuggler's retreat or perhaps there was a linked passageway to the Salthouse.

The recommended route to the cache is towards Port Eynon Point and then downhill on a rough track. The lower part of this track is passable in winter and spring but quite overgrown in summer months. The cache contains a Logbook, pencil and sharpener (please do not remove these) and various trading items
