James Fort was built after the Battle of Kinsale to guard Kinsale harbour and the mouth of the river Bandon. The people of Kinsale had to pay for its construction as a punishment for their siding with the Spaniards.
From this peninsula, you will have great views of Kinsale and Charles Fort - where another cache can be found!
Access to the fort is free. The fort’s star-shaped ramparts are overgrown, but can still be made out. The fort itself is worth seeing, and it looks like it is going to get some conservation work done. The structure near the listed viewpoint, known as the Blockhouse, is older than the fort and dates back to 1549. A chain went from here to the other side so that the harbour could be closed in times of danger. You can get a great view towards Charles Fort and Summer Cove from the boulder.
To get there:
- Either: walk along the marina, passing the Dock Bar on your right. Turn right after the last house. Then follow signs up for James Fort. The path can get muddy.
- Or: go to the beach, passing beside April Cottage (the black and white sign points at the harbour, but you can spot a blue painted sign in the correct direction). On the sandy beach (swimming a possibility!) turn left and go up the little trail. This will take you through the meadows, which are – hopefully - less muddy than the first option.
