Geocache Description:

Paths are muddy and slippy, good boots recommended. If you bring small children then do watch out for the medieval fishpond which has steep banks dropping in to very deep water

Wharram Percy is possibly Englands best known deserted medieval village, of which there are many. The site is managed by English Heritage.

Evidence has shown that the earliest inhabitants were Neolithic farmers and were followed by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons.

Wharram Percy survived William the Conqueror’s ‘Harrying of the North’ and the Black Death of the 14th Century and was at its largest in the Norman period. The village however was empty by the early 1500’s. The last families were evicted by the landowner and their houses demolished to make way for sheep pasture.

The Church survived into the 19th century until it too was no longer in use, its ruins still stand.

From the parking spot you can then walk the ancient pre-historic track way to the village, about ¾ of a mile. Various information boards can be found around the fields giving information about the site.

To find the cache you should press on a little further through Deep Dale and take the Wolds Way passing the church and fish pond then upwards and Southerly along the lip of the dale.

If you would like to turn your trip in to a short circular walk (about 3 miles) you could continue on the Wolds Way to a line of trees where the marvellous Deepdale and the Wolds Way sweeps West. Here you should go North East on the Centenary Way. Cross the fields passing a tumulus (ok well its not much more than a bump now) and the old railway tunnel air shafts, until you come out on a single track road. Follow this in a Northerly direction and you will come back to the parking area, the road has good visibility so approaching cars can easily be spotted.

*************** This cache was relocated March 2007 after the last went missing. This is now a small cache so small trading items only. The cache has also moved, better hidden we hope ****************
