Simple mini near what used to be called Heberts Candy Mansion.
This cache is located off Route 495, please do not try to
get to it by parking on the highway for your own sake. Even if you
are a member of the species represented by the 1960's Beatle
wann-abee band it would be tough. From the highway head on about 1
mile south to the Rt 117 exit and explore the back roads while
getting closer to the cache. Or head about 2.5 miles north to the
Rt 111 exit and explore even more backroads but it might be better
to get back on Route 495S. There should be little traffic on this
road so discression is not too necessary, but apparently it's a
school bus resting spot so time your adventure accordingly.
Afterwards treat your family to some candy or an ice cream sunday
at the mansion. I think they still do that even though the name has
changed. And you can bring your kids to Animal Adventures a stones
throw from the cache. Are they looking at you right now? Check out
animaladvenures.net
There are several caches near here but none that you can get to
without driving a little closer. One nice one is the PowderHouse,
another is Gas Saver V over near where you can see Minutemen Fly,
it's actually under the glide slope of one of their runways. And
Gas Saver XII along with a couple other caches are not far from the
heliport at the now defunct ski slope to the north.
This cache was inspired by the Gas Saver series as you can guess
by the name, see the cache listings for Geos
of the Jungle,. But it's container is not like those. The
container is on the small size with no room for trade items, and
bring your own writing utensile.
This overpass is one of the first I explored in an incredibly dumb
move of wanting to ride over all overpasses and underpasses between
where I lived in Worcester to where I worked in Lowell. Since then
I have explored Rt 495 all the way up to Portsmouth, NH and down to
the Cape, all of Rt 2 where it is divided, all of Rt 3 north of
Boston, all of Rt 95 & 93 north of Boston, all of Rt 91 from
Conn/Mass up to White River Junction VT, most of Rt 128 and all of
the Mass Pike. This was before GPS's were common and gas was so
very cheap, although I had a very horrible Magellan Military GPS
since 1991, 1 channel no memory and sometimes no fix or many tens
of minutes to a fix, back then I don't think the constellation was
well populated.
