Ever driven past junction 36 on the M6 and wondered what views you
can get from the hillside above (Farleton Knott), you'll be
surprised what's hidden behind Farleton Knott.
Farleton Knott contains large attractive mosaic of limestone
pavement between the villages of Holme, Hutton Roof and
Burton-in-Kendal.
Limestone is a hard sedimentary rock consisting of calcium
carbonate, formed by the deposition of plant and animal remains on
the sea floor and is thus known as a calcareous rock. Limestones
often contain the visible remains (fossils) of shells and
corals.
From the recommend starting point go over the stile and follow the
farm track north until you get past the first ridge of limestone
pavement, from this point follow the footpaths that run along the
dry stone wall north.
Do not climb over the dry stone wall at any point along this
route, there is a point where you'll meet up with the farm track
again and can follow the gps and dry stone wall west to the cache
site.
Be careful when looking for the cache, although it's a quiet area
you can be seen from all directions and from above on hot days
(paragliders). From the cache site there are views north east to
Ingleton. The short distance west of the cache gives you 360 degree
views taking in Lancaster, Morecambe Bay, Lakeland Hills, Yorkshire
Dales, Ingleton and on hot days during summer it's the launch point
for paragliders.
