Did you know that in Wirral there were an astounding 8 open air pools? Today these pools have all sadly gone, but take a while to reflect….
Parkgate Pool
This quiet tourist spot brings back happy memories for lots of people, least of all me, but I definitely do not recall the open air pool here!
Take some apples and carrots for the horses!
In 1923 Mr AG Greenfell, whose uncle built Mostyn House School, opened an open air swimming pool at the far end of North Parade. It used the salt water from the estuary and the boys from Mostyn House School helped to excavate it. They then had to walk the mile or so from school to the pool weekly for their swimming lessons.
Although the pool was for the use of the boys of the school, the public could use it for a small fee. The pool was very popular, and in 1932 a second childrens’ pool was opened.
Unfortunately the pool’s life was shortlived as the estuart began to silt up. In the late 1930’s the pool was sold to Neston Urban District Council, but the decline continued. One source states that the pool remained open throughout the 2nd World War and closed in the 1950’s and another stated that it was filled in during the late 1940’s.
In my opinion, the site today is a car park for the Wirral Way! The cache is a nice stroll away from the pool site, along the Wirral Way.
