Geocache Description:

Another in the historic series spotlighting a world famous Western New York City. NOTE: Cache is NOT on the sign nor is it in the garden.

The word "Onguiaahra" appears on documents as early as 1641, and a little later, "Ongiara". Both are Indian words thought as meaning "The Straight" or, a more romantic meaning, "Thunder of Waters ". The usual distortion of unwritten word have transformed it to "Niagara". Located on the Niagara River north-northwest of Buffalo, Niagara Falls was first settled by Native Americans, occupied by the French in the 1680s, captured by the British in 1759, and settled by Americans in 1805. It was held by the British during the War of 1812, regained after the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814 and was then incorporated in1892. One of the world's first hydroelectric plants was built in the very early 1900's and was replaced between 1963 and 1965 by a plant capable of producing 2,100,000 kW. The city is also a port of entry. Several bridges span the river to Canada. Historically a maker of abrasives, mechanical and electrochemical products, and paper and aluminum goods, the city saw its industrial base decline severely after World War II, and since the 1960s the population has fallen by nearly half. Tourism is one of its oldest industries and many state parks were established in the area. But in recent years its Canadian sister city has surpassed it as a tourist destination. Today, tourism is still a mainstay of its economy and has recently had a new boost with the addition of a gambling casino and resort. Current population: 53,900.
