Geocache Description:

St. James Episcopal Church, at the corner of Wayne and High Streets in Piqua, Ohio was dedicated and consecrated more than a century ago. However, the history of this church goes back even further to the early frontier days of west central Ohio and to the efforts and generosity of settler, benefactor and public servant - Colonel John Johnston. This cache is about this church and that man.

Born in Northern Ireland on March 25, 1775, Johnston was eleven when he sailed with his family to America in 1786. After some early schooling, young Johnston dabbled in the mercantile business first in Kentucky and then in Pennsylvania. In October, 1793 after several years driving supply wagons, Johnston followed General “Mad Anthony” Wayne into winter quarters at Fort Greenville (Ohio) for his first real taste of the frontier and the beginning of many years of devotion to the service of his country and to the welfare of the Indians tribes he encountered.

When an Indian agency was established near Piqua in 1811, now Colonel Johnston was transferred to the new agency where he bought some land west of the village. A log cabin he built there was soon replaced by a two-story mixed Dutch/Colonial/Georgian style brick farmhouse. The house and the old barn are still standing today and are the focal points of The Piqua Historical Area State Memorial, a 200-acre park commemorating Col. Johnston’s numerous contributions to the growth of early Ohio and settlement of frontier America. (visit link)

In those early years of the 19th century, Episcopalians settling into the area from points east came together in each other homes and farmsteads to worship. Col. Johnston’s home was often used for such gatherings. Present in 1818 when the first Episcopal diocese was organized in Ohio, Johnston is credited with being responsible for the organization of St. James Parish in 1819 and donation of land to its trustees in 1825.

Johnston’s devotion and generosity to the Episcopal presence in Piqua culminated in the 1828 building and 1833 consecration of St. James Church at the corner of North and Spring Streets. Not too many years later after rapid growth, a new church building was built at the corner of Wayne and High Streets on land donated by John H.D. Johnston, son of Col. John Johnston. Consecrated in 1847, it was used continuously until the present building, on the same lot, was dedicated and consecrated on October 1, 1899.

Today as in the past, St. James Episcopal Church is a thriving church welcoming visitors one and all… including the caching variety. For the latter, you’re looking for a micro, camo-taped cache containing a log near the church’s memorial garden. The garden is watched over by a statue of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and the environment by whose example reminds us that we are called upon to bring about justice and peace in our world, to end violence, war, poverty, oppression and to protect our fragile planet.

(Cachers can park on High Street alongside the memorial garden.)
