PLEASE NOTE: There is no need to bushwhack to this cache! If you encounter brush, (other than a footpath very near the end) you are on the WRONG trail.

From the late 1700s to the 1950s the Queen's, Dominion, and Dalhousie Quarries were in operation in Purcell's Cove. These quarries produced the slate, ironstone, and granite that was used in the construction of many downtown Halifax buildings and structures, including the Citadel, the Town Clock foundation, the Morse's Tea Building, many buildings at Dalhousie University, the wall of the Grand Parade, the old Post Office Building, and early warehouses of the Halifax waterfront.

The Purcell's Cove Road intersects, almost exactly, the division between slate and ironstone on the water side, and granite on the opposite side.

From the Queen's Quarry, granite was carried from the hills to the wharves by one of Canada's earliest railroads. From there, it was loaded on barges and shipped to Halifax. The railroad is long gone, and the trolley track now exists as a walking trail.

The initial ascent is steep and somewhat arduous, but you will be well rewarded for your efforts at the cache location! There is no need to bushwhack more than the last few metres. Terrain rating is solely for the hill.

Parking and trail head are next to the Purcell's Cove Social Center. Kids (and kids at heart) will enjoy climbing the massive granite slabs at one part of the original quarry site, located at N44 36.585 W63 34.626.
