This cache is located near the base of one of Akron's skyline
landmarks, Goodyear's Old Guard Clock Tower. It is on the city
owned sidewalk that runs along the World Headquarters of
Goodyear.
From this spot, you can see Goodyear's other famous skyline
landmark, their giant flashing sign. When I moved to Akron in 1997,
it flashed, "Go" Go" "Goodyear!". My kids loved it, everytime we
went down Market Street, they became zombies to that sign. They
would mumble the words as it flashed, "Go" "Go" "Goodyear!" A few
years ago, the sign was changed to a flashing, "On the Wings of
Goodyear".
Boring!
This tower was built between 1915 to 1917. Erected as a reminder
to Goodyears employees of the importance of time. It also served as
a memorial to the Old Guard -- Goodyear's original employees who
were still working at the company in 1917. The names of the Old
Guard are cast inside the largest of the tower's bells. (The chimes
were installed in 1920.) There also is a plaque at the base of the
tower.
In 1998, as part of the company's centennial celebration, the
structure became home to a time capsule to be opened in 2098.
This tower is a working bell tower, chiming every 15 minutes. At
least is was when I was there.
Cache can be done 24/7, but keep in mind, this is a big city and
we have homeless muggles walking the streets. Night cache at your
own risk.
That being said, this area is well lit with no dark alleys or
blind spots. You can see someone walking up to you from a good
1,000 feet away. I personally would do this cache at night to see
both landmarks lit up. It's impressive.
LOTS of places to hide a large micro here. I left it so that the
trained cacher eye would see it. A muggle shouldn't be able to see
it so don't re-hide it harder for the next cacher. Just make it
blend in with it's surroundings. If you can't find it, use the
dead-on clue!
