Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, a cache was placed
that had a pretty cool theme. It didn't pass inspection. Now it's
just a ammo can in the woods. Big deal, right? Have fun!
______________________________________________________
Now, if you wanted to experience what this cache was
originally about, you can try the following instructions.
It is important that you understand that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO
COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS CACHE, but it's a
fun experience in the history of how technology has evolved.
On the underside of the cache lid you will find a series of
letters. You may want to write these down as it is a coded message.
When you finish the cache, you can go to:
N 42° 07.931
W076° 00.123
There you will find hidden, the code machine
setting for an Enigma Machine. This was a code machine used by the
Germans during WWII. Use the settings for August 16th, 1944 (the
39th birthday of Marian Rejewski, the Polish mathematician who
broke the code before an Enigma was captured).
Put these settings into their proper places on the Enigma
Simulator and try to solve the coded message. Again, this isn't
necessary in order to log the find, it's only for the fun of it.
You can email me the message after you decode it, or email for help
if you have trouble with it. I'll be glad to assist you.
You can read up on the history of this amazing device at the
following sites:
Dirk's
Download
and:
Andy's Applet
These both have Enigma Simulators that you can change the
setting on and enter the coded message. It will only decode it if
you adjust the settings correctly.
GROUNDSPEAK WANTS EVERYONE TO BE AWARE THAT THERE IS ALWAYS THE
POSSIBILITY OF RISK INVOLVED IN DOWNLOADING ANY FILE OFF THE
INTERNET. I have run these programs on my computer and have found
them to be safe.
The latter site has an applet version that you might find easier
to use. The important thing to remember there is to click on the
[SET] button after EACH category of numbers/letters that you enter.
On BOTH versions, the indicator setting (or letter dials) need to
be set to "BPD" before you start to decode.
I will post the names of all cachers who successfully solve
the puzzle on this page in order of who gets the answer to me. Good
luck!
