“INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST”

The Indiana Spirit Quest series of geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries and historic sites built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just two years, the quest has grown to over four hundred fifty caches hidden in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan and the hiders have grown to over twenty cacher teams, most of which of which are comprised of Dogs and their Humans. Over 975 cacher teams have logged over 11,700 finds. The most ambitious of many cache machines found 102 ISQ caches in a single day (daylight hours only).

INDIAN SPIRIT QUEST #440

"GAERTE"

Welcome to Gaerte Cemetery in Perry Township, Miami County, Indiana. There are tombstones here dating back to the 1850's

the rows here run North and South, and are numbered West to East. In section 2, Row 2, there should be a stone for "John Garper, a soldier of 1812, Died April 3, 1877, aged 83y 10m 7 d." If it exists , the first person to find it, can upload a photo of it in a log here, along with coordinates, for an extra smiley. (some records indicate he is buried in Citizens Cemetery in Akron, ISQ #1--same deal.)

UPDATE APRIL 2006:

Mad Bee , from Lexington, Ky. writes:

"I am part of the Barnhisel clan and have a number of relatives buried here, including my grandparents.

"One interesting story relating to one burial is Elizabeth Barnhisel who died in the 1934 at 103. Her husband Cornelius, died in the Civil War of non-combat reasons, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Upon his death, the military sent out a letter to his widow to inform her of his passing, but the letter never arrived. I think it was 40 years or so later, the letter was found behind a drawer in an old post office desk and delivered to Elizabeth.

"Most of the Barnhisels are buried in the SW corner of the cemetery and hers is in this general vicinity."
