CACHE INFORMATION

The cache is in a small to medium tabloc box and covered with black material. There is a magnificent walk along the river bank from Dromahaire to the cache site which takes in part of the Sligo Way so if you have time this is a smashing way to visit the cache.

Creevelea Abbey is the remains of a Franciscan building which was traditionally used by the clan of the O'Rourkes for princely burials. The original building of the Abbey was sponsored by an early O'Rourke chieftain.
There are remains of several O'Rourke stongholds in Co Leitrim at Parks Castle, Dromahaire itself and Chara, just north of here.
At one time the clan ruled over a large section of Connaught and present day Leinster. The family provided several Kings of Connaught.
One of the most famous (or infamous!) "O'Rourkes" was Dervogilla, wife of Tiernan O'Rourke who indirectly sparked off 800 years of British presence in Ireland. Diarmuid McMorroagh, king of Leinster, raided O'Rourke territory while Tiernan was on a pilgrimage and took off with Dervogilla (who was not a spring chicken at the time. It is believed that Devogilla was not exactly an unwilling participant in the venture. In the ensuing fighting McMorragh enlisted the help of British forces, led by Strongbow, to help him fight off Tiernan O'Rourke and others. And so, at the apparent whim of infidelity, commenced a crown presence in Ireland which lasted till the early 20th century.
Dervogilla returned to her husband a couple of years later and they apparently enjoyed a peaceful old age together. She became a generous benefactor of the church in Ireland and one of the best preserved buildings associated with her sponsorship is at the world renowned remains of Clonmacnoise.
