Geocache Description:

This is a fairly easy cache requiring you to answer a few short questions to get the coordinates for the final cache, a 2-quart plastic container located a short walk away.

This is the first of a series of geocaches highlighting sustainable living and renewable energy technology in the state of Wisconsin. Please take time to explore this creative facility and the more than 70 miles of trails that wander through this 27,000 acres of diverse wildlife habitat.

The coordinates above will take you to the Stanton W. Mead Education and Visitor Center at the Mead Wildlife Area. This $1.5 Million dollar (2/3 financed by private donations), 6,208 square foot facility was designed as an example of sustainable and environmentally-responsible construction. The building shell has a high-performance exterior envelope, with special attention to air-sealing details and super insulation. Building materials were evaluated for their environmental impact and took into account local availability, recycled content (such as the recycled glass floor tiles manufactured locally), toxic components, durability and resource depletion.
In addition to it's high efficiency construction, the building's energy needs are almost completely offset by the following 'grid-tied' renewable energy systems:
-Geothermal ground-source heat pump heating & cooling
-10 KW wind energy turbine on 100' tower
-2.3 KW pole-mounted tracking solar photovoltaic array
-Ground mounted solar hot water collector array
-Wood-fired central masonary biomass heater w/ hydronic exchanger

The final cache is located a short distance away at N44.41.ABC; W89.51.DE (E is a two digit number)

A= (The number of letters in the color of the wind turbine, other than white) +1
B= The number of panels on the ground-mounted solar hot water collector array (do not include the small PV panel at the top used to run the water pump)
C= Number of chimneys on the building
D= The fourth digit in the year on the corner stone to the right of the front door
E= The total number of individual rectangular solar panels (approximately 2'x3' each) on the pole-mounted tracker
